Hall of Judgment: Why I Think It’s Important for GURPS / Hall of Judgment: Porque eu Penso Que Ele é Importante Para GURPS

At the GURPSDay Summary of last week, Douglas Cole said “In personal Gaming Ballistic News: All of my RPG products are on sale until January 2. Whether as a gift or for yourself, check ’em out.”

That reminded me I want to write about his Hall of Judgement book and keep postponing it.

For what I know Hall of Judgement is the first GURPS book written outside of the house. In which I mean its a third party book. Although, its author is not an unknown person since he has written other books for SJGames and articles for Pyramid Magazine. As we can see on Sean Punch’s Foreword here, he already had goodwill with the company.

However, this “experiment” reminds me of when Wizards of the Coast (WotC) released D&D 3.0 and the Open Game Licence (OGL) in 2000. Although D&D had already won the “TTRPG Wars” I think OGL put them in a new level.

OGL generally means lots of products of questionable quality, and some products of good quality. But it saturates the market. With lots of products redirecting to the official D&D Books, it gathers more attention just by sheer volume (not that D&D needs it).

Would Hall of Judgement be something similar to OGL for GURPS? Maybe. “Powered by GURPS” is already there. However, I don’t think SJGames will let people create products freely as WotC did with OGL.

Everybody wants quality, but now, I think GURPS would benefit from a “saturate the market campaign.” Moreover, a “Powered by GURPS OGL” would not mean that GURPS products quality would fall. Everybody knows that an OGL book is not a D&D official book. Because of that, no one expects that an OGL book will be excellent like the official ones.

But, it is the first step. I hope “Powered by GURPS” becomes a thing. Because we need more GURPS players, and they are out there waiting to know that GURPS exists.

No Resmo do GURPSDay da semana passada, Douglas Cole escreveu “Em notícias pessoais do Gaming Ballistic: Todos os meus RPGs estão com desconto até January 2. Seja como um presente ou para você mesmo, dêem uma olhada” (tradução livre minha).

Isso me lembrou que eu queria escrever sobre o livro Hall of Judgement e fico sempre adiando.

Até onde eu sei Hall of Judgement é o primeiro livro de GURPS escrito fora da casa. Com isso quero dizer que é um livro escrito por alguém de fora da SJGames. Apesar que o autor não é alguém desconhecido pela empresa, já que ele escreveu outros livros para a SJGames e artigos para a Revista Pyramid. Como se pode ver aqui no Prefácio escrito por Sean Punch, o autor já tinha pontos positivos junto à empresa.

Contudo, este “experimento” me lembra de quando a Wizards of the Coast (WotC) lanlou o D&D 3.0 e a Open Game Licence (OGL) nos anos 2000. Apesar de que o D&D já tinha ganho a “Guerra dos RPGs de Mesa” eu acho que o OGL o colocou em um novo nível.

A OGL geralmente significa uma grande quantidade de produtos de qualidade questionável e alguns produtos de boa qualidade. Mas, ela saturou o mercado. Com muitos produtos redirecionando para os livros oficiais de D&D, ele conseguiu mais atenção somente pela grande quantidade de material (não que D&D precisasse de mais atenção).

Poderá o Hall of Judgement ser algo semelhante ao OGL para GURPS? Talvez. “Powered by GURPS” já está aí. Contudo, eu não acho que a SJGames irá deixar as pessoas criaram produtos livremente como a WotC fez com a OGL.

Todos querem material de qualidade, mas por agora, eu acredito que GURPS se beneficiaria mais de uma “campanha de saturação de mercado”. Ainda mais, um “Powered by GURPS OGL” não significaria que a qualidade dos produtos de GURPS cairia. Todos sabem que os livros OGL não são os livros oficiais de D&D. Por causa disso ninguém espera que estes livros sejam excelentes como os oficiais.

Mas, é o primeiro passo. Eu espero que “Powered by GURPS” se torne algo grande. Porque nós precisamos de mais jogadores de GURPS e eles estão por aí esperando para saber que GURPS existe.
